Day 4: Yellow Couch

I’m glad you made it back! Today we’re going to be getting a little bit introspective… so take a second to sit down, breath in, and lets explore Yellow Couch together

Lyrics

I am on our yellow couch, there’s fire in the treetops,

There’s a fire in me too, there’s a fire in me too,

Cardinals sing the morning in while I am spinnin’ out again,

They’re leaving soon, my cardinal’s leaving soon

I hope that you don’t mind that I get high sometimes,

And I hope that you don’t mind that I’m crawlin’ in my skin again,

Oh, I can feel my skin

Realizing I’m afraid of falling out of range of you ,

and losing all our love over the horizon,

Cardinals sing the morning in while I am spinnin’ out again,

They’re leaving soon, my cardinal’s leaving soon

I hope that you don’t mind that I get high sometimes,

And I hope that you don’t mind that I’m crawlin’ in my skin again,

Oh, I can feel my skin

I hope that you don’t mind that I get high sometimes,

And I hope that you don’t mind that I’m crawlin’ in my skin again,

Oh, I’m holding on by a thread.

Behind the Lyrics

These lyrics flowed out of me faster than most of the other songs I write and I think that makes them feel a little more flow-of-counsciousness compared to the other songs I write.

The first verse started out as a placeholder that I was planning on rewriting to be honest. I was playing the guitar lick while I was sitting on a bright yellow futon (shoutout to IKEA) that I kept in my studio, and it was the first sentence that came to mind. BUT after writing the rest of the song the realness of it just felt right. This song really is a window into what I was thinking and feeling in those hours.

At the time, my fiance and I were going through a period of a lot of BIG changes in our relationship and in who we are as people. I was having some anxiety around that. This song helped me to process all of those feelings and recognize what was going through my mind.

(Btw, if you’re wondering, we figured it out and after some very real conversations we’re all good now! PLUS now we have Yellow Couch to remember my anxiety-fueled spin out!)

Live Acoustic Version

I can’t believe we’re already finished with Day 4! Be sure to dress for the weather tomorrow because we’re going to Alaska.

I’ll see you there!
